Mental Health and Self-care: How to Practise Self-care for Better Mental Health

December 3, 2023

How are you, really?

Take a moment to reflect on how the past month has been for you. We often forget that taking care of our mental health is as important as our physical health. It plays a significant role in our overall well-being. In today’s fast-paced world, where we balance various roles and responsibilities, taking time for self-care, rooted in our faith, is more vital than ever.

Why is Faith-Centred Self-Care Essential for Mental Health?

Self-care, grounded in Christian principles, is essential for sustaining mental health for several reasons:

1. It Reduces Anxiety and Stress:

Practices like prayer, meditation on God’s word, and worship can help lower levels of worry and stress. These intentional acts of seeking God’s presence create a buffer against the demands of daily life, offering our minds a chance to find peace in Him. “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God” (Philippians 4:6).

2. Enhances Self-Esteem:

When we actively attend to our needs and prioritise our well-being through the lens of God’s love for us, it contributes significantly to an improved self-perception. Understanding our worth in God’s eyes fosters a positive self-image, and this intentional focus can help us reduce stress and anxiety levels.

3. Improves Productivity:

Taking breaks to engage with God, whether through scripture, prayer, or quiet time, has proven instrumental in enhancing productivity. These pauses allow us to refocus and approach our tasks with renewed vigour, serving as an investment in our overall efficiency and quality of work.

Beyond Surface-Level Self-Care

True self-care delves deeper, encompassing not just our physical needs but also our emotional, mental, and spiritual requirements. It’s about feeding our soul and spirit with the right food – the Word of God. When these fundamental needs are attentively addressed, our lives transform.

Actions for a Transformational Self-Care Routine:

1. Engaging in Regular Exercise:

the release of endorphins during exercise not only contributes to an improved mood but also works to alleviate tension—a way to care for the body God has given us that also lifts our spirits. A simple 20-minute session can significantly impact our physical and emotional health.

2. Practising Mindfulness in Christ:

Cultivating an awareness of God’s presence in every moment helps reduce stress and anxiety levels. It’s about focusing on His love and peace in the present.

3. Taking Breaks Throughout the Day:

Brief moments of prayer, scripture reading, or simply being still in God’s presence can rejuvenate our minds and hearts. And this doesn’t have to happen in a quiet room or at your desk. You could take a moment to stretch, breathe deeply, or go for a stroll while meditating on scripture, or whispering a prayer.

4. Fostering Healthy Relationships:

Spending quality time with loved ones, fellow believers, or in community can significantly contribute to our spiritual and emotional resilience.

5. Incorporating Self-Compassion Rooted in God’s Grace:

Rather than punishing ourselves for mistakes or failures, understand that we are loved and forgiven through Christ, which enables us to be kind and understanding to ourselves. This is a healthier mental outlook.

Genuine self-care becomes a catalyst for a more empowered and balanced engagement with life’s demands when it’s grounded in our faith. Take care of yourself, not just physically and emotionally, but spiritually too, so that you may give your all to others and fulfil the purpose God has for you.
